Meet Joe Iwanicki

I’m a dedicated lawyer with a deep commitment to serving our community and making Sylvan Lake a better place for everyone. Throughout my career, I’ve focused on helping people navigate complex legal challenges with fairness, integrity, and a strong sense of justice.

As a proud parent of two young daughters, I understand firsthand the importance of building a safe, supportive, and vibrant town where all children—and families—can thrive.

My vision for Sylvan Lake is rooted in transparency, responsible growth, and meaningful investment in the things that matter most: our schools, parks, infrastructure, and local services. I believe in listening to residents, advocating for practical solutions, and working collaboratively to ensure every voice is heard.

If elected, I will bring a thoughtful, community-first approach to council—one that prioritizes long-term sustainability, inclusivity, and resilience. Together, we can build a town we’re proud to call home.

We are stronger when we work together. By listening to your concerns and ideas, we can shape a future that reflects the values and aspirations of everyone who lives here.

Joe’s Priorities for Sylvan Lake

Joe Iwanicki is running for municipal council with a clear focus on the issues that matter most to Sylvan Lake residents. His priorities reflect the concerns he’s heard directly from the community—ranging from public safety and infrastructure to economic development and support for seniors. Joe believes in practical, transparent leadership that puts people first. His approach is rooted in listening, advocating for smart solutions, and building a town that works for everyone—today and for generations to come.

1. Tackling Petty Crime and Public Nuisances

From speaking with numerous residents about their concerns I hear a common theme.  People are frustrated with a perceived lack of attention given to things like theft, vandalism, and garbage.  While these subjects are not headline grabbing they impact peoples lives in a persistent way and make residents feel ashamed of their community.  I promise to do what I can to bring attention and resources to these issues so people feel more secure in their community.

In addition, I plan on seeking input on how to best address issues which impact the way our town is perceived by visitors, such as garbage/littering and filthy public washrooms.  As a community, we can come together to address many of these issues without simply throwing money at the problem.

2. Supporting Economic Growth and Business Development

To encourage Sylvan Lake’s natural advantages for economic growth and expanding new areas for business development and investment.

As a business owner I understand that economic growth can only occur when ambition can align with opportunity.  Sylvan Lake needs to provide opportunities for business owners to want to operate from Sylvan Lake and take advantage of the natural beauty of the area as well as the influx of people during the busy season.

In addition, while tourism is a large driver of the economy the Town’s entire focus should not be on that one economic stream.  I want to seek input on how the Town can provide viable and alluring business opportunities for new industries and businesses to open in Sylvan Lake.

3. Planning for Infrastructure That Meets Future Needs

Town infrastructure is being neglected.

Like it or not Sylvan Lake is growing.  The Town needs to pay attention to this reality and plan for the future.  Our water supply, roads, utilities, and other public goods all need serious attention so they can meet the demands of the residents of 10-20-30 years from now.  If we do not treat these issues seriously today we are plaguing future generations with the costs of our inaction.

We also need to remember that infrastructure is more than just roads and utilities.  We need to think about the investments in the Town’s future through seeking funding for the expansion of our schools, libraries, and sports facilities.

4. Expanding Support for Seniors

Our seniors need more support in Sylvan Lake.

The rising cost of living and a shortage of seniors living facilities are a problem across Canada.  In smaller communities this pain is felt more deeply as our neighbors are forced to move to larger centers to find accommodations, potentially moving away from community support and family.

I intend on devoting significant attention to development opportunities which will encourage or expand seniors living facilities in Sylvan Lake as well as broader community supports for these friends in our community.

5. Making the Town’s Budget Understandable and Accountable

Making the Town’s budget make sense.

It is constantly mentioned by people that our taxes are too high.  I am not prepared to admit that taxes are high, low, or reasonable.  What I am prepared to focus on is making the Town’s budget make sense to the average person.  I want all residents to feel like they understand where their tax dollars are going, even if they do not agree with how those funds are spent.

It is impossible to get everyone to agree when it comes to spending public money - and any attempt to please everyone is doomed to failure.  But I promise to do everything in my power to have the budget make sense, and to ensure funds are spent with the utmost care.
